A 1980 LSWAG march through London The London Status of Women Action Group was formed in 1976. At a final open meeting of the International Women's Year Coordinating Committee chaired by Jean Hewitt, the motion to form a new politically-focused women's group in London came from the floor. It was put Barbara Houston and seconded by Arlene Timmins. The motion was well-received and passed unanimously. Gradually, the framework emerged for this new group, a constitution was written, and the name - London Status of Women Action Group - was chosen. Barbara Houston, a member of the University faculty, was elected as the first Chair.
